Cyber security has been the primary focus for me. I have aligned my majors and minor to better equip me for the responsibilityes of the real world. The information Security track has provided me with the skills that will help me analyze the system to find the vulnerabilities and measure the risk associated with it to provide appropriate recommendation for it's protection. The school has also provided me with the skills to perform a forensics investigation that will help the organization determine the extent of the attack, if organization should pursue criminal charges, and will help me gather evidence that is permissible in the court of law.
Analysis of the business is an important step that should be completed in order to find the areas that need improvement for the business to become more productive. This analysis helps us find the gaps between the leadership's vision and current business processes to design a system to close those gaps. This section demonstrates my analytical skills through completed case reports and the strategic assessment for The Family Business Center at University of Louisville.
College of Business at University of Louisville permits student to gain real world experience by analysing a non-profit organization from the community that can benefit from a new system. Students prepare a set of of requirements for the organization, based on the analysis of their business processes, that will be used to design and implement a system which will help the organization close the gaps in their business process and help leadership accomplish the long term goals.
I had the opportunity to learn mutiple programming languages such as C, C++, C#, and SQL. You can find examples of programs that I have written along with the website that I developed as part of a group for University of Louisville School of Nursing.
College of Business at University of Louisville has provided me with the skills that are rquired for the day to day activities of any business. This section will demonstrate my ability to communicate effectively as a representative of the business.
Databases are the backbone of any organization today. Databases store detailed information about organizations' employees, data required for day to day functions, data about customers, and financial information of the organization and the customers etc. It is crucial for the organization to protect databases from attacks. It is also important for one to understand the database design.
Design
The College of Buisness at University of Louisville provided me with skills to understand, design, and implement relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server. Following are various aspecs to designing a relational database.
Entity Relationship Model: ER model is a way to represent the relationships between entities using graphics. THe diagram can later be used to creat databases.
Normalization: Normalization is a process of reorganizing the database to reduce data redundancy
SQL Queries: SQL allows the retrieval, modification, and deletion of data in a database using commands such as SELECT, UPDATE, and DELETE.
Triggers: Triggers allows data in other tables to be updated when a data in a table is inerted, updated, or deleted.
Stored procedure: Stored procedures help with repetitive T-SQL tasks by providing security and encryption through speed and reduction in network usage because they are stored on the server.
Security
Security has been my primary focus at University of Louisville. You can find more information about my experience below.
We are in the internet era where data is routinely being shared between multiple users and devices. User can be on the network inside a locked build which requires special access or the user could be in a remote location where any one is able to access that data. It is Important for us to analyse the data and user's need to access this data based on the CIA triangle, grant access if necessary, and ensure the confidentialy and integrity of the data is protected. College of business provided me with knowledge of various network protocols, tools that assist with network security, and expeirence with pentesting tools such as Kali Linux.
Computer Forensics deals with steps to perform after an attack or when a crime is committed. It provides steps that need to be performed in to preserve the evidence to be used in a court. As part of the class environment, I gained experience with tools such as FTK imager, DEFT linux etc.
Final project for computer forensics class provides a real world scenario where I had to work in a team to retrieve data that could be used in a court case. This project encompasses everything learned and demonstrates experience with several forensics tools.
You can find my analysis of the Family Business Center at Univesity of Louisville. The assessment was done to find gaps in the business process to make the center more effective at reaching goals of the leadership.
Following are the case reports I completed by analysing the business, finding the main problem facing the organization, and providing a recommeded option to resolve said problem.
Burlington Northern: Burlington Northern is faced with stiff competition causing it to lose some market share and hence lose profits. Decision makers are faced with the questions on how they could better compete to increase their market share and net profits. They must decide on how much money will the company be willing to spend on a solution to get the best benefit to risk ratio. The recommended option for the company is to implement the system on certain tracks that join multiple regions in a way that mimics a miniature sized version of the organization, which would allow managers to check exactly how successful the system is. A successful system would increase the capacity on those tracks and hence allow more goods to be moved. If the ARES does not show any improvements, it would allow researchers to have better understanding on why the system failed and what can be done to improve it if possible.
Connor Formed Metal Products: Connor, under leadership of Bob Sloss, has become one of the leading manufacturers of metal products such as springs, metal stampings, complex wire forms etc. Sloss hired Michael Quarrey, who had a bachelor of science degree in computer science and had completed his MBA, as human resource and information systems manager. Michael has implemented a well-designed system at a major plant which made the plant more profitable. Sloss is now faced with the question about how to implement the system throughout the company. Based on the analysis of the organization's environment, structure, and strategy, the recommended option for the company is to design a new system for each division based on the system already in place and the one implemented in Los Angeles. This would allow the company to retain the gains that it has made in plants returning a profit while increasing the chances of loss making plants to turn a profit.
Webvan: Webvan was started by Louis Borders who was also the founder of Borders Books and wanted a new challenge following the success of the bookstore. Webvan had been relatively successful as the company had signed up 10,000 customers in the San Francisco area in five months. This was supported during the initial IPO offering where the stock shot to an 80 percent premium despite the mounting losses, 35 million dollars on expected sales of 11.9 million dollars in 1999. Borders was faced with questions about what the future strategy such as if Webvan continue to push with additional product lines or should Webvan consider a takeover offer by a large grocery chain such as Kroger. Recommended option for Webvan is to expand their product line to include a variety of items. Online grocery business is struggling as is shown by other competitors who are struggling to make a profit. Webvan has a huge task to convince people to use its services by overcoming their requirement for tacit knowledge and bounded rationality. Consumers are not yet comfortable with ordering their groceries online and having it delivered to their home especially fresh produce. Webvan could try selling other items such as electronics, appliances that consumers do not need to experience before purchase. Webvan has already built a distribution center that can deliver any product to the customer should Webvan decide to expand. Webvan could as easily stop carrying items that do not sell and do not attract new customers.
I worked as part of a team to analyze the School of Nursing at University of Louisville to create a list of system requirements, and design a system based on them. You can find the complete system under the programming section.
I had the opportunity to gain experience with multiple programming languages during my time at University of Louisville. I got experience with C and C++ as part of the Speed School of Engineering, and with .Net Framework as part of College of Business's CIS program. I, as part of a team of 5, created a website for the School of Nursing that will replace the system they currently have in place. You can find more information about the analysis and design in the previous sections of this site. The website can be found here and the code can be found on the GitHub here.
I have gained experience with business communication in roles at Kindred Healthcare, T-Mobile, and at school. You can find examples of memos, journals, letters, and presentations below.
Memo: This is an example of a memo written as part of the class assignment to introduce myself.
Professional Letters: You are a customer relations employee at T-Mobile US. Customer named Zachary Smith came to run credit for his company, A&H Sales Inc., and to move his service over to your company. Write a letter to:
Inform the customer that he has been approved for service.
Inform the customer that his credit application has failed/declined.
Persuade the customer to start service with T-Mobile today.
